Tell Me Another: A Six-Week Storytelling Workshop

You already have the material, you’ve been collecting it your whole life. In this six-week storytelling class, we’ll explore the art of personal narrative (true stories, told live, in the tradition of shows like The Moth). You’ll learn how to find the stories in your own life, shape them, and discover the humor and heart in them.

We’ll explore what makes a story relatable, different ways to structure a story, how to lean into your own unique self, and performance techniques that help bring a story to life in front of an audience. Through thoughtful group discussion, we’ll discover what’s working, what isn’t quite landing yet, and how to make each story stronger. Most importantly we’ll have a fun and learn some new skills!

While we will do some writing exercises, these stories are spoken, and no writing experience is required. The class is designed for both first timers learning the foundations and returning storytellers looking to challenge themselves. 

Throughout the class, you’ll develop and workshop a story that you’ll present at our final showcase on The Skokie stage!

Class Dates: Monday evenings from 6:30–8:30 p.m.
October 12, 19 & 26 and November 2, 9 & 16

Final Performance: Sunday, November 22, from 3:00–4:30 p.m. at The Skokie

About Your Instructor: 

Monica Matsakis is passionate about helping people develop and tell their stories. As a storyteller herself, she understands the excitement and vulnerability of telling a personal story in front of an audience. One of the most rewarding parts of teaching for Monica is seeing her students continue telling stories long after the class ends. Many have continued performing and become part of Chicago’s storytelling community.

Monica holds a BFA in Theatre. She previously taught at The Laughing Academy in Glenview, co-hosts Do Not Submit Glenview, and has performed throughout Chicago and the suburbs.
